Are cheap, no cone hair products better?

I used to use all the old cheap brand of shampoo and conditioner because I was broke. (White Rain, V05, Suave) My hair was always shiny and very healthy looking. I started making money of my own and started buying the more pricy products such as Dove, Herbal Essences, Pantene, Fructis, etc. Now my roots always look greasy and my hair is frizzy. I discovered that the more expensive brands contain sillicones in the shampoos and conditioners. Is this the cause of my problems? Should I just go back to the old cheap brands?
