A good protein treatment will soften the hair. Find one that works for you and do one, once a week. Nexxus has Keraphix with is a light protein that can be used weekly, they also have Emergencee which is a heavy protein to be used every other month or so.

I used to have a really similar problem, and I wanted to grow long, shiny hair before my wedding.
Coconut oil is the best thing for coarse hair, and it's inexpensive. Massage it in at night and wash it out in the morning for shiny healthy hair. Even after the first time I used it people commented on the condition of my hair.
To help it grow faster you should take a hair growth supplement. Hair formula 37 are good http://www.fasterhairgrowth.com/pills.ht... These actually do work, as apposed to some that are available on the market.
I use Joico K-PAK deep penetrating reconstructor on my hair about once a fortnight and find that really helpful. Also I use Joico Silk Result Smoothing shampoo and conditioner for thick/coarse hair. These are available from http://www.joico.com/html/np_products.ph...

You may try Aussie's "3 Minute Miracle" I love that stuff, it works very well on my hair. I usually just comb it through my hair AFTER I get out of the shower. Towel dry my hair, put it on, comb it through, leave it about 5 minutes, wrapped in a towel, then rinse it out with COOL water. No matter what lind of "protien conditioners" that you may use, always rinse it out with cool water, not hot water. good luck!
