I have seen in several films references to certain characters being so scared that their entire head of hair has gone pure white within a matter of minutes. Is this actually physically possible as I thought that the actual hair itself was dead. And if it is possible how does it happen?

yeah once in high school my friend saw her brother murdered then next day half of her hair gone white but it dont happen to all people
